Miami, Florida. The truth is that it is a privilege to participate in the calls that Euskal Etxea of Miami carries out. For many this club is a link to the life of jai-alai and a special relationship with the maintaining of ties with the Basque culture and traditions. There are also those who go solely for the enjoyment of the wonderful atmosphere at its events; people enjoy the meals and gatherings that the club organizes through the year; celebrations like Aberri Eguna, Christmas, San Fermin, Thanksgiving or even San Ignacio, that gathered nearly 40 people last Saturday around a good table that wasn’t lacking in music, singing and the good camaraderie that reigns among its members.
The Euskal Etxea of Miami is reorganizing and needs people who are ready to commit to pay monthly dues of $60 or less, when dinner anywhere is at least $30 in Miami. The club has a nice headquarters at the disposition of its members, and that also includes a library with books, records, a computer and Basque software. It holds Euskera classes, with the help of teacher Aitzol Azurtza who teaches virtually. Every week club members gather, as they do in the Basque Country, preserving the tradition of the txokos -the name of the club is Txoko Alai - but offering the services a Basque club does. Euskal Etxea of Miami is member of NABO, North American Basque Organizations, Inc.
Founded in 1986, the club is 26 years old. Some have talked about continuing the activities but without the clubhouse. If it is to be, it will be, but it is worth the effort. If you live in the Miami, or the Dade County area, don’t hesitate. You can participate in the monthly “Wine and Pintxos” meetings, satisfy your culinary hobbies, invite friends to the clubhouse, share in Basque festivities and breath the healthy atmosphere of family picnics. Being part means improving your quality of life and the reorganization that is taking place includes the creation of a chapter of concerned members who do not want to see the clubhouse close.
