Mexico City, Mexico. The Basque club in Mexico is working hard to improve its Basque courses and so far has managed to increase the number of students participating. Last Tuesday, February 22nd, the board of directors renewed its agreement of collaboration with HABE, which provides subsidies for Basque classes. Kinku Zinkunegi, coordinator of HABE’s Euskara Munduan program, met with club president Lourdes Arrechea, as well as other board members, in Mexico, to discuss course progress.
According to the club, classes have already started, but registration is still open for anyone wanting to enroll. They currently have three teachers: two from the Basque Country, who also work as Basque teachers in Mexican universities – Gurutzne Etxeberria from Amezketa and Nerea Basterretxea from Bermeo – while the third professor, Gabriel Ceballos, is a local.
Class Schedule:
- Beginning (youth and adults): Mondays 17:30-19:30 for youth and 19:30-21:30 for adults
Professor: Gurutzne Etxeberria
- Intermediate (youth and adults): classes are already in session but those who would like to join in should speak to professor, Gabriel Ceballos, at the center on Wednesdays at 19:00. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 19:00-21:00
-Advanced (youth and adults): Professor Nerea Basterretxea teaches on Tuesdays from 19:00-21:00. The teacher will interview students to determine language level.
Courses consist of two hours of class per week with tutoring and monitoring available via the internet. Cost is $100.00 pesos a month for club members and $300.00 pesos for non-members. Anyone wishing to enroll should contact the Euskal Etxea either in person (Centro Vasco, Aristóteles 239 Col Polanco), or by calling 5250 40 25 or via email: centrovasco@prodigy.net.mx.
