Rock Springs, WY, USA. Born in Gorriti (Navarre) although he has resided in the state of Wyoming since the age of 16, Martin Goicoechea carefully cultivates his love for Bertsolaritza that he brought with him to the United States.  These days, he recorded some verses about the Coronavirus situation that plagues the world.  Martin is also NABO’s Euskera Chair, and never misses the chance to develop activities to support our language and culture in the heart of US Basque community.

In the video that follows, he shares his vision as a Bertsolari facing the Coronavirus (video followed by the transcription in Basque and English).  Thank you, Martin, NABO, as well as to your daughter Mikaela Goicoechea for her technical support of Martin’s creative works:

Martin Goikoetxea sings his verses about the Coronavirus from his home in Rock Springs, Wyoming

Birusa onekin orain daukagu
Mundu guzia nahasita
Denak gogoan daukagu orain
Chinotarraren bisita
Mundu guzira zabaldua da
Chino aldean hasita
Uste gabean onek utzi du
Denai ateak itxita

(With this virus we have,
the whole world is confused.
We all have it in mind now,
a visit from China.
It’s extended all over the world,
beginning from around China.
Unexpectedly, this closed everyone’s doors.)

Egun batetik bestera hau da
Guri azaldu dan gauza
Uste gabean jendea arida
Elkarri kutsa ta kutsa
Bihotza elkarri zabaldu banan
Eskurik etzagun luza
Denbora asko bano lehenago
Ia gelditzen den birusa

(From one day to the next,
this virus appeared.
Unexpectedly, people are
getting infected.
Open your heart to one another, but
don’t extend your hand.
Before too long,
I hope the virus is contained.)

Korona onek jotzen digu gaur
Mundu guzira bandoa
Eta medikuk esaten digu
Ez bildu elkarren ondoa
Eskurik ezin eman elkarri
Orain eman okondoa
Lehenago gendun hoitura honbat
Hori ere galtzera doa

(Today, Corona is the sound of the world,
and the doctors tell us,
“Don’t get together with one another.”
We can’t extend a hand to one another.
Now, we give each other an elbow.
The one good habit we had before,
even that, we are about to lose.)

Au bezelako birusarik len
Munduan izan otea
Jendea biltzen den lekutan
Itxi digute atea
Askorentzako sufrimendua
Askontzat errematea
Inork ezindu gaur kalkulatu
Egiten a’i dan kaltea

(Was there a virus like this
ever before in the world?
Where the people gather,
the doors are closed.
There is suffering for many.
For many, it is the end.
Nobody could have calculated
the damage it’s doing today.)
