Lexington, KY, USA. The University of Kentucky confirmed the addition of María Villanueva Aperribay (Donostia, 2001) to its women’s golf team. Villanueva took her first successful steps in professional golf in Europe, being her 2019-2020 season in the US at Augusta a very good one. Now in the fall, she will joining the Kentucky Wildcats where she has been welcomed with great expectations and enthusiasm. Her world ranking is here.
With the arrival of the Coronavirus, Maria decided to spend the quarantine at home in Donostia and is waiting until she will again be able to cross the pond and return to Kentucky. “It’s a shame since the best tournaments were happening now, and that makes me sad. But we have to be responsible during this time and follow the health directives,” she told to a Basque daily. During her first year in Augusta, she played in 6 tournaments averaging 73.6 strokes, according to the University of Kentucky’s website.
Villanueva Aperribay chose Kentucky over Mississippi and South Carolina and is happy with this new challenge, and with the team’s work ethic, as well as her coach, Golda Borst who also expressed her enthusiasm about Maria’s joining the team as a strong and motivated competitor.
