Caracas, Venezuela. Great celebration last Monday, September 14th, the 103rd birthday of Mari Cruz Diez Lazcano, originally from the Basque Country but Venezuelan resident for most of her life. Born in 1917, in Elorrio (Bizkaia) daughter of Felipe Diez and Maria Fernanda Lazcano, she lived the civil war and the bombings of Durango. She lived in Donostia where she married Vicente Alberro Echeverria from Bermeo, and two of their sons were born there, Fernando and Pedro.
Due to the political and economic situation, they emigrated to Venezuela where their third son, Antonio was born.
In Venezuela, the family joined the Eusko Etxea in Caracas and the Basque-Venezuelan community, where they, along with the rest of the community, supported Basques in Euskadi and the Basque Government in Exile, participating in a large number of fraternal and solidarity activities towards Euskadi that permeated the life of that portion of Euskadi rooted in Venezuelan soil.
Great family spirit and affection presided over the entire day for the honoree, surrounded by her family and friends, who received numerous greetings.
A big zorionak, Mari Cruz! Besarkada handi bat, a big hug!
