Writer Bernardo Atxaga, one of the best-known Basque authors around the world, traveled to Bulgaria at the end of January thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Cervantes Institute to present the translation of his book Obabakoak into Bulgarian.  On January 29, Atxaga gave a talk at a bookstore in Sofia that was attended by nearly 100 people.

Sofia, Bulgaria.   The presentation in Sofia of the translation into Bulgarian of Obabakoak sparked notable interest.  This was aided, no doubt, by the presence of its author, Bernardo Atxaga, who met with nearly 100 of his Bulgarian readers to talk to them about his best-known work.

The event took place at the Greenwich Bookstore, thanks to the Instituto Cervantes and the Instituto Vasco Etxepare in Bulgaria.  Accompanying Atxaga were the translator, Maria Pachkova and the editor.  Pachkova translated Obabakoak in 2012, but was already familiar with his work having translated Soinujolearen Semea (The Accordionist’s Son) in 2009.  She has also translated various works of other authors in Spanish including those by Eduardo Galeano and Julio Cortazar.

Obabakoak is one of the best-know works in Basque literature and has been translated into more than 25 languages.
