New Yorkers have surrendered to Txakoli thanks to the good work done by Basque restaurateurs and chefs in the Big Apple that have publicized this typical Basque white wine. In this regard, the owners of Txikito, Eder Montero from Bilbao and Alex Raij, stand out for their first organizing Txikifest, the Txakoli Fair three years ago. The event will take place this Sunday, the third year in a row that will stop traffic dedicating an entire street to this Basque event.

New York, NY.  This Sunday the third edition of Txikifest will take place, a fair aimed to promote Txakoli among New Yorkers and whose proceeds will go to a non-profit organization that supports families and victims of gender and domestic violence through safety, healing, support outreach and education.

Supporters of Txikifest 2013 are chef Eder Montero from Bilbao and NY chef Alex Raij, owners of the Txikito restaurant, the Quinto Pino and La Vara.  They also have support from the Basque Provincial Government of Bizkaia and the participation of local restaurants like La Newyorkina, Huricane Club, Kuma Inn/Uni Nom, Co & Sillivan St. Bakery, La Palapa, Bar Mateo, El Quinto Pino & La Vara along with the hosts at the Txikito,

Street closed

The fair takes place on a private street in the middle of Chelsea that as in previous years will be closed to traffic.  They are expecting 500 attendees to try various Txakolis from the three designations of Basque origins, as well as pintxos and dishes provided by the restaurants.

Participating bodegas include: Ameztoi, Txomin Etxaniz, Ulacia,  Gaintza, Bengoetxe, Talaiberri, Zudugarai, Akarregi Txiki, Eizaguirre, Uriondo, Itsasmendi, Gorka Izagirre, Berroia, Gorrondona, Ametza & Xarmat.

The festival has already established itself as part of the cultural agenda in the city thanks to word of mouth of the great atmosphere at previous editions among other things.  This year’s event poster and the glass that serves as the entrance ticket were both designed by advertising and fashion illustrator Jordi Labanda

Presentation of “Txakoli of Bizkaia. The Journey”

As an appetizer to the fair, Txikito will present today the English version of the book Bizkaiko Txakolina. Bidaia (Txakoli of Bizkaia. The Journey).  The book was recently recognized as the best book on European wines in the 2013 Gournamd Wine Book.  The event will be directed to specialized journalists, bloggers and gourmets in New York City, which will be accompanied by a taste of Txakoli and Basque gastronomy.

This event was organized by the Provincial Government of Bizkaia that will also have a stand present to promote Bilbao and Bizkaia as a touristic destination.  There will also be a trip to Bilbao and Bizkaia raffled at the event.
