Basque clubs around the world have been celebrating Euskera Day with several activities organized with a lot of excitement and the effort of hundreds of volunteers and Basque language lovers. In Berlin, for example, literature was the star, with a talk by young writers Irati Elorrieta and Danele Sarriugarte, as well as a multimedia presentation “Euskal Herria-Germany.” In Sao Paulo, Brazil, the students at the Brazilian Basque club renamed their classroom, while in Sydney Australia, the Gure Txoko organized a meal including an Aurresku.
Donostia-San Sebastian. The Berlin Basque club began its celebrations ahead of time, on November 27 organizing a literary talk by two young talented Basque female writers: Irati Elorrieta and Danele Sarriugarte. “This was the main Euskera Day event at the Basque club and we think that it was a good example of our club’s activities. Young Basque women writers, Basque literature in the city of Berlin, translation….Danele, Irati, Galder, Julia and other members gave us a great talk,” Ainhoa Añorga, club president, told EuskalKultura.com.
On December 4, the Basque club remembered Koldo Mitxelena in his Centennial and showed the work done by the club for the dissemination of Euskera. The club also presented its translation project of the documentary Musik der alten Welt: Baskenland. Afterwards, Elisabeth brandt presented the translation project of the documentary series: Euskara Jendea,“ Añorga said.
To conclude, Lourdes Izagirre and Danel Agirre presented a new project, an even that will unite reading the novel Su zelaiak and the reproduction of the recordings of songs by Basque prisoners during he Big War safeguarded at the Phonographic Archive of the Ethnologic Museum in Berlin.
In Sao Paulo and Sydney
In Brazil, the Brazilian Basque club in Sao Paulo also celebrated several days ahead of time with Kinku Zinkunegi, coordinator of the Euskara Munduan Program. The Basque club celebrated with is students and renamed its classroom at the Tremenbe Cultural Center as “Euskaldun Berri."
Finally, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Syndey Australia organized a meal on Euskera Day where an Aurresku was performed. The club shared its event on Facebook.
