Madrid, Spain. Karlos Cid Abasolo (Madrid, 1963) is an active Basquephile, professor, translator, poet and Basque reference in the Spanish capital.  He is a Ph.D. in charge of the Basque Studies Department at the Complutense University in Madrid where he carries out, among other tasks, translations into Basque of works by authors such as Milan Kundera, Jaroslav Hašek or Josef Škvoreck from their original Czech. As a poet, after Keinu konplizeak in 2018, he said farewell to 2020 publishing Laztanak eta Aizkorak.

Laztanak eta Aizkorak  (Caresses and Axes), as the title suggests includes two parts and addresses two opposing aspects of the human being: love and rejection of love.  In the first, the author narrates emotional moments and pays tribute to the endearing and/or long-suffering people who star in them.  The second refers to painful moments and passages, with poems that become severe and unforgiving.

The author has imagined readers who are used to reading poetry and those who may not be.  “Because if my poetry is to be placed in the genre, it has a lot of prose, letter genre, email and so on,” he tells EuskalKultura.eus.  The prologue is by Bertsolari and writer Xabier Amuriza.

It can be downloaded here for free.  You can also listen to all of his poems at the same link, recited by Manex Leoné, and the rest by Karlos Cid Abasolo himself.
