Founded in November of 1951, the Lagun Onak Basque club in Pergamino, in the province of Buenos Aires, celebrated its 63rd anniversary, in advance, with a big dinner for nearly one hundred people. The event was also attended by representatives from the Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco and from Euskaldunak Denak Bat, in Arrecifes, the club that sponsored the club in its beginning and who still accompanies it today at a large number of its activities.
Pergamino, Argentina. The festivities for the 63rd anniversary of the Lagun Onak Basque club took place on October 25 at the Basque clubhouse. The invitation that was extended to the entire community via social media in Basque and Spanish enjoyed a great response with nearly one hundred people attending, including members of Basque clubs from Chacabuco and Arrecifes who enjoyed the party program.
The celebration began with an Aurresku performed for the authorities by Euskaldunak Denak Bat dantzari Miguel Garcia Bernau. This wasn’t the only Basque dance to be enjoyed during the evening since the dantzaris also invited everyone to join in on a Fandango and Arin-arin as well as a Kalejira
There was live music throughout the evening provided by Luis Carballo; raffles, thanks to donations from friends of the club; and a wonderful menu. Looking to the future, the club is preparing to travel this next weekend to La Plata to participate in the Semana Vasca with its dance group who will participate in the plaza dancing, with two of their dancers, Camila Querede Ugarte and Ana Lopez also joining Ugarritzak from Arrecifes in the theater production.
Talk on Genealogy
On October 17th, the Pergamino Basque club welcomed Laura Nobile who gave a talk “What the Son Wishes to Forget, the Grandson Wants to Remember,” as part of FEVA’s cultural offerings. Nobile’s talk gathered an audience that was particularly interested, consisting mainly of history students, researchers and representatives of other communities. The director of the Family History Center in Pergamino, the organization that provides tools and possibilities for genealogy research was also present.
To conclude 2014, members and friends of Lagun Onak will gather on December 5 to celebrate the International Day of Euskera and Saint Xavier. “We are already planning, with more energies, for next year, since our numbers continue to increase. Fortunately, many who had left the club due to family, or time constraints have returned ,” Lagun Onak sources told EuskalKultura.com.
