[Interview with Juliana Batista, member of the Eusko Barsildar Etxea Basque Club in Sao Paulo]
Juliana is learning Basque at the Eusko Brasildar Etxea with Karol and Oskar Goitia, and representing the club in the Euskara Munduan program. Her first contact with the language was when she was small through her grandmother, Julia Baustista Aleman, who was born in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands who met some Basques during the Spanish Civil War before fleeing to Brazil, “They transmitted her their love for the language and culture of Euskal Herria,” she explains.
“My grandma never forgot those who helped her and she used to remember words and songs in Basque. She used to call me “txiki,” and these are my sweet memories of when I was 9.” Juliana told us about her experience in Euskal Herria, what her relationship is like with friends there, and what her plans are when she returns. Mila esker Juliana, for spreading Euskera in Brazil and for facilitating this interview for us in Spanish!
