Heartbreaking news has come to us again, this time of the death in an accident of Joshua Rose, from Winnemucca, Nevada, who had participated in several NABO Udaleku summer camps. It was at these camps that he made good friends all over the country, friends who are now mourning his loss on Facebook and other social media.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  It happened last weekend and since then, social media hasn’t stopped commenting on the death of Joshua, by a large number of young and not so young members of the US Basque community who remember him fondly, after meeting him at one Udaleku or another.  The death of someone of this age, especially unexpectedly, is not something that is easily assimilated.

“All of us who were at NABO’s Udaleku in Buffalo, Wyoming in 2008, remember him fondly, when he must of been 12 or 13.  He fit in well and participated in all the activities, making many friends.  He was quiet at first, but little by little he joined in.  He was interested in the classes and I remember him fondly that year in Buffalo, and then later in Reno, NV,” said Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com when asked about Joshua.

Kate Camino, who has directed several editions of Udaleku, including the 2008 edition in Buffalo and others in Reno, was also moved by the unexpected news, especially since this is the second death in recent years of an Udaleku participant.  In 2012, Jaime (Heguy) Brown, from Los Banos, passed away at the age of 19 from a tumor.  She also appears in the Udaleku group picture taken in Buffalo. “Then Jaime and now Josh,” she says sadly.

Everyone at EuskalKultura.com, as well as its extended family of readers and Friends, send our most sincere condolences and a big hug to his family and friends, especially to Carl, Andree Bidart Rose and Elise Rose.  Doluminak eta besarkada bero-bero bat.
