Vitoria-Gasteiz. The President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, will take a hectic two-week tour that will take him to China and Madrid with visits to the Basque Country, the Vatican, Galicia and Italy. The purpose of the trip is to seek investments for Uruguay and to strengthen this country’s relationships with governments, businesses and institutions in the places visited.
In the Basque Country, nevertheless, Mujica will have some time for more personal activities, a visit to Muxika in Bizkaia where his father’s family is from, and whose legacy remains clearly in his name. The president has yet to find out if he still has family there, but will try to find out during his stay in this town of 1,400 inhabitants.
From the Vatican to Muxika
Mujica’s agenda in Euskal Herria will begin tomorrow afternoon with a meeting with Lehendakari Iñgo Urkullu in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Afterwards, there will be an official reception at the Lehendakaritza. Day after tomorrow, Mujica will travel to the Vatican where he will have an audience with Pope Francis. He will then return from the Vatican to spend the night in Muxika.
On Sunday, June 2, he will visit the Mondragon Cooperative to get first-hand experience of how the Basque cooperative works. After lunch in a traditional Basque restaurant, the President of Uruguay will meet with the local Uruguayan community.
