Necochea, Argentina. Every year at this time we share the San Sebastian festivities program with our readers that the Basque club in Necochea has organized since 1957. The huge festival includes typical food sales in their Basque club hall converted to look like the Konstituzio Plaza in Donostia, the election of its mayor, dances, txikiteo, mass and the traditional danborrada, to join in the festivities in Donostia on January 20th from Argentina.
After 63 uninterrupted years, and because of the preventive measures against COVID-19, the Necochea Euzko Etxea has decided to cancel its 2021 event. Club president, Kiti Zubillaga told EuskalKultura.eus that “The conditions are not in right to welcome all Basques and young people who come to our club unconditionally, as they always have and for that reason, unfortunately, we have cancelled our event.
Although the huge event won’t take place, they are hoping to hold a smaller more symbolic event on January 20th, in front of the clubhouse, maintaining protocols and social distancing, as the board has not yet discarded the idea of doing something in person.
Given the current circumstances, they will not hold the Festival of Communities 2021 either. According to information provided by the Minister of Health, Necochea has suffered 39 deaths and a total of 2,377 cases.
