Buenos Aires, Argentina. Felix Isidro Legarreta, from Hernani (Gipuzkoa), settled in Tandil when he arrived in Argentina after leaving the Basque Country in 1936 due to the war there. At the age of 21 he had deserted and had been a prisoner, but later he was able to escape and lived in France for three years. He later took advantage of an opportunity to come to his adopted country. He did this during Peron’s time, responding to a call from a relative. His story can be found here.
Roberto Luis Lejarreta, on the other hand, was born in Argentina, son of Basques. His father and uncle knew emigration well before going to Argentina; since they spent some time in the US working as sheepherders. From there, his father would return to Euskadi to later immigrate to Argentina. In his case, being born in South America, his family would return to Europe when he was a boy and he witnessed the bombing of Gernika by Nazi planes. In 1947 he would return to Argentina. His testimony is here.
