Sabrina Otegui, Buenos Aires-Mexico. Josu Garritz is the descendent of Basques from Navarre and Bizkaia and so has participated in activities at the Mexico City Euskal Etxea since he was small. It was one of the most emblematic “herri kirolak”, weightlifting, that allowed two of his passions to unite, strength sports and “pride in being Basque.”
Josu is about to begin his university studies this fall in Entertainment Business Management and at Anahuac University. He had to cancel his first trip to Euskal Herria this year due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, he is sure that he will cross the pond soon to get to know, among other cities, Pamplona and Bilbao where his great-grandparents left in 1938, Josu Garritz and Alicia Ruiz, to find refuge in America.
Josu shares his name and love for the sport with his grandfather who served as the Mexico Euskal Etxea’s president and was a World Champion Pelota player from 1978-1982, to mention a few of his achievements. Besides sports, this young harrijasotzaile also plays the drums in a pop-rock group called Hacunos.
Harrijasotzailes from Euskal Herria or those interested in the Diáspora, can reach Josu by emailing: jgarritzc@gmail.com.
