Montevideo, Uruguay. The Immigrant Olympic Games in Montevideo are a sporting competition organized by various collectivities of immigrants as a way to fraternize and strengthen the bonds of friendship, coexistence and knowledge between different centers and institutions. To date, eleven communities organize the activity that includes soccer, basketball, “truco,” and chess, among othes. This year, thanks to the Basques, soka-tira will also be incorporated in the event.
At the inauguration that took place on May 8th, representatives of the collectivities participated along with the National Secretary of Sports, Professor Jorge Rodriguez, and the Secretary of Physical Educations, Sports and Recreation in the city of Montevideo’s Mayor’s office, Professor Daniel Leite.
The local Haize Hegoa Basque Club represented the Basque community at the activity and participated in the inauguration carrying the Ikurriña. The event culminated with participating entities sharing their typical dishes. Photos available, here.
