Donostia-San Sebastian. The prestigious North American magazine National Geographic published an article in this Friday’s issue with a selection of photos and infographic explanations of the Bombing of Gernika by Nazi aviators and allies of General Franco on April 26, 1937. The article corresponds to the Spanish version written by Estanislao Jara entitled, “The Bombing of Gernika in 1937, and the Massacre that inspired Picasso. See Some of the Images that Inspired the Painter form Malaga to Create one of his Most Famous Works."
Xabier Irujo, director of the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, who has researched the bombing extensively explains that the attack was fundamentally two things: a terror bombing and a war experiment. Since that moment, a new way to bomb cities was born, both with explosives and their proportion, as well as the formation of planes that would launch them, calculated to the millimeter. Destruction would be total, and later, cities like Warsaw would suffer during the Second World War because of the experiments carried out on Gernika, the article concludes.
