“Euskarabentrua,” is an expedition of 120 Basque speaking youth between the ages of 16-17 who will tour the Basque Country during the month of July. The call for eligible participants was also extended ot the Diaspora, a large part of which were thanks to EuskalKultura.com. Imanol Basterra read the notice in our newsletter, and applied, and was selected as the representative of the Southern Cone. To apply to this first edition of the “Euskarabentura,” interested individuals had to present a creation either in art, literature, history, music, or A/V about one of these themes: “Euskera and your town,” “Euskera and the sea,” or Euskera and women.” Imanol Basterra chose “Euskera and women,” and it was his original look at the subject that gave him the opportunity to participate in this great adventure that will take place in Europe this summer.
“Euskarabentura” is an expedition that will tour all seven historical territories of the Basque Country. The group of 120 youth between the ages of 16 and 17 years old, two of them from the Diaspora the second being Unai Fraeters from Washington DC, departs on July 1st from Maule (Zuberoa) and will conclude on July 31st in Getxo, Bizkaia. Youth will make the trek on foot, following Done Jakue Bidea, the Camino de Santiago, and every day will participate in activities like museum visits, talks, workshops, sports competitions, and debates, to mention a few.
Imanol is from Viedma, in the province of Rio Negro, and was born into a family that has roots in Navarre. It is there, where he learned to love the culture of the Basque Country and its language. Since a very young age, he has participated in events at the Aberri Etxea Basque Club. If that wasn’t enough, Imanol is the brother of Rocio Basterra, a Basque teacher with a long career in the Euskara Munduan Program and who recently was elected president of the club, also with whom he has the possibility of maintaining a conversation in Basque.
