The Sodre National Ballet of Uruguay has offered its artistic direction post to ballet dancer from Bilbao, Igor Yebra. Even if the decision isn’t definitive, the Basque dancer would then replace Julio Bocca in one of the most prestigious ballets in Latin America. The dancer commented that the mere fact that they were considering him for the post is a huge honor, especially to take over for a dancer like Bocca.
Donostia-San Sebastian. According to the Etxepare Basque Institute, the idea of entrusting the Management of the Sodre National Ballet to Igor Yebra came from Julio Bocca himself, Artistic Director of the ballet from 2010-2017. Igor Yebra has been invited to present his project to take over the legacy left by the great Argentine figure to the Uruguayan company that he built in eight seasons, the result of incessant work.
As stated by the dancer himself, it is a huge honor simply to be considered, although the definitive decision still has to be made.
Born in Bilbao, Igor Yebra debuted as a professional in the Ballet of Victor Ullate (1988-1996). When he launched his solo career, he became part of the Australian Ballet (1997-1999), the first of many international companies on five continents that he has worked with in his career.
In 2006, he founded his own dance school in Bilbao, and two years later was commissioned to operate the Municipal School in Amurrio, Araba.
Hello everyone! The word is out…! After a downpour of congratulations, calls and signs of affection, we thought it was a good idea to urge caution in a statement which can be found at www.igoryebra.es. Currently, we are confirming that the artistic director position of the Sodre National Ballet in Uruguay has been offered to Igor Yebra, but is still in the negotiation phase and so the decision is not yet final. Igor is very appreciative of the offer. Many thanks to everyone for your kindness, to the Minister of Culture of Uruguay and the Sodre National Council for the offer, and above all to Julio Bocca for encouraging Igor to submit his candidacy.
