Historian, Argitxu Camus, will talk about Basque emigration in Pamplona as part of the expo “Artists’ Glimpses of the Basque Diaspora”

The Palacio Condestable in Pamplona hosts the exhibit “Artists’ Glimpses of the Basque Diaspora,” a selection of 21 works in various disciplines with the emigration phenomenon as its theme.  As part of the exhibit, historian, Argitxu Camus, will give a talk tomorrow on the history of the Basque Diaspora.  The exhibit will be in Iruña until June 8. 

Iruña-Pamplona, Navarre.  The Palacio Condestable in Iruña provides a glimpse into the world of immigration and the Basque Diaspora from an artistic perspective.  The exhibit “Artists’ Glimpses of the Basque Diaspora,” organized by the Pamplona town hall and the Jumelage Popular Bayonne-Pamplona Association.

The exhibit is curated by Viviane Delpech (Eusko Ikaskuntza/ Université de Pau et des pays de l'Adour UPPA), that began with an art contest sponsored by Eusko Ikaskuntza.  The exhibit includes 21 works by 19 artists in disciplines like photography, painting, sculpture, multimedia installations and mosaics.  All of them reflect on the phenomenon of emigration and the reality of the Basque diaspora.  The exhibit is in four languages (Spanish, Basque, French and English).

The exhibit is complemented by parallel activities, like the talk that historian Argitxu Camus Etchecopar will give tomorrow.  It will focus on the history of Basque emigration.  On Monday, May 30, Eric Dicharry will also give a talk where he will talk about Beñat Iglesias Lopez, an artist from Pamplona who settled in New York.  On June 8, the documentary Le cimetière des vivants (The Cemetery for the Living) (50min) by Audrey Hoc, winner of the Baionako Hiria prize in 2011 will be shown.

The exhibit is part of a large project sponsored by Eusko Ikaskuntza with the support of the cultural project platform Ezmugak (Irun) and Donostia-San Sebastian 2016 European Capital of Culture.  The first part was the international colloquium Art and the Basque Diaspora (XIX-XXI Centuries) that took place thanks to support from the University of Pau and the University of the Basque Country in Baiona and Donostia in February.
