Salto, Uruguay. Last Monday afternoon, Harriague Week began in Salto that includes various activities over the coming days aimed to pay tribute to Pascual Harriague, Basque pioneer, and introducer of the Tannat grape in Uruguay.  As an extension of these activities, they will also pay tribute to all Basque pioneers who have contributed to the development of the department of Salto and the entire country, according to the departmental government.

As part of the festivities, the commemorative stamp marking the 200 years since the birth of Harriague in Hazparne was presented in the presence of departmental and national authorities, as well as the Managing Commission of the Harriague Bodega who highlighted the advances of the project to save this important legacy.  This commission includes representatives from the local mayor’s office, the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea Basque club and the Association of the local viticulturists, the Cenur Litoral Note at the University of the Republic and the University of the Basque Country.

The local Mayor, Andres Lima, also announced that he has already submitted a decree by which the Harriague Winery’s estate is granted to the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea, in the form of a modal donation.

At the ceremony, the Basque club’s president, Luis Zaldua, also declared the club’s commitment of creating a “Harriague Bodega Cultural Space, Ground Zero of the Tannat,” while Mayor Lima stressed that this action will contribute to the enhancement of the work and rescue project of this cultural heritage.
