Montevideo, Uruguay. With just over a week left before Christmas, the Haize Hegoa Basque Club announced its final activities for 2020, and like the majority of this year’s activities, due to the pandemic, they will also be virtual. The proposals for the last weeks of the year will include a Gastronomy Workshop on Friday the 18th, and a talk about the Olentzero on Tuesday the 22nd, both coordinated by Maite Bengoa.
This Montevideo Basque club also announced that despite last minute changes, also due to health measures, the traditional Christmas card contest, that this year celebrated its 25th anniversary, was carried out successfully.
Mariel Fernandez Artasanchez told EuskalKultura.eus that “Since we were unable to hold it in person, we handed over the materials to the children and youth who wanted to participate and later in a Zoom meeting, they were able to listen to Basque legends, traditions and stories narrated by Maite Bengoa that inspired their drawings. In the afternoon we went to each of their houses to pick up the Christmas cards that they drew, but with a nice and pleasant surprise: our dear Olentzero accompanied us.”
Observing all of the health protocols, in addition to removing the cards, the Olentzero passed out gifts and a delicious snack to the participants. In this special edition of the contest, everyone received an award. The material created by the txikis will become, as every year, the cards that the club will send with Christmas and end of the year greetings.
