This Saturday, some 50 members of the Gurtubai/Gurtubay family will gather in the Bizkaian town of Atxondo, where the surname originates. There are two farmhouses in Atxondo, Gurtubay-beaskoa and Gurtubay-ganekoa that the attendees will be able able to visit. The reunion will gather family members from Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and England.
Atxondo, Bizkaia. The Gurtubay family, a wide Basque saga with descendants in various countries in Latin America, will hold a family reunion on Saturday in Atxondo, where the last name originated. This is the first family reunion for this group that has been communicating over the last several years via social media, through the Gurtubay Facebook page for example, and who has been successful in filling in a large part of its family tree going back to the 15th century.
Nearly 50 people are expected to attend, the majority of which residing in the Basque Country and others from Madrid with others yet coming from South America: two from Argentina, six from Venezuela and one from Chile. There is also one Gurtubay who will come from London.
The reunion will begin with a tour of Atxondo where they will visit the farmhouses and areas that are related to the family’s history. The group will also be welcomed by the Mayor of Atxondo. Afterwards there will be a meal and after dinner various genealogical research will be shared by the group.
