For the third year in a row, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Sydney opened its doors to welcome its Catalan friends – that are many – to celebrate Catalonia’s National Day, the Diada, together. It was last Sunday, September 9, a few days ahead of the celebration in Catalonia that took place yesterday. Just like last year, the ambience at Gure Txoko was unbeatable, and the place was full, with meal tickets being sold out the day before. Catalan media, such as the online information portal VilaWeb published news about the event.

Sydney, Australia.  Sydney’s Basque club was the meeting place for that city’s Catalan community, last Sunday, who celebrated the Diada in the club’s fronton.  In reality, the official celebration of the Diada took place yesterday in Catalonia, but in the antipodes this group of Basque and Catalan friends decided to push the celebration up to the weekend so that as many people as possible could attend.

This is not a new event – it is the third year that the Diada has been celebrated in Sydney at Gure Txoko and as in previous years, the ambience was wonderful with tickets selling out days before the event.  Finally, full to capacity, the Basque center welcomed a few hundred people who enjoyed a meal in the fronton, visited with friends, and enjoyed good music and dancing well into the night.
