The Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo has published its own 2017 calendar. To do so, they organized a photo contest called “Nossa Euskal Herria – Our Euskal Herria,” collecting various Basque images that gave rise to the calendar, “the first bilingual one in Basque and Portuguese,” club president, Pilar Garcia Alava said. “Anyone who wishes, may get one online, and have this small jewel as well as support the oldest Basque club in Brazil (1959).”
Sao Paulo, Brazil. Pilar Garcia Alava is a member of the first generation born in Sao Paulo, who is fighting for the future of all the effort that her parent’s generation put in founding a Basque club and keeping it alive in the largest Brazilian city, keeping the Basque flame alive. The club and its members and friends are working as hard as they can to guarantee the future of this rich heritage founded in 1959 that also has a clubhouse, Gernika Kutun, where a tree of Gernika is growing and where a large number of their activities take place.
One of the new initiatives in 2016 has been the creation of the bilingual Basque-Portuguese calendar. To put it together, they held a contest called “Nossa Euskal Herria – Our Euskal Herria,” and the calendar includes the 12 best photos presented, three of them worthy of the top three in the competition and the rest selected by the popular vote online.
The calendar is already out. It aims to be useful to the Basques in Brazil, as well as providing some economic support to the club for maintenance and activities.
