Donostia-San Sebastián. Today is the 82nd anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, an unprecedented aerial assault. With time, the shock and pain give way to reflection and the will to learn and extract something good out of the barbaric act against the helpless civil population. Throughout the day, and in the upcoming days, events and ceremonies in memory with a clear message of peace will multiply around the world at the hands of the Basque community, as well as society as a whole, through different calls and institutions.
In some places in the Diaspora, events started some days ago. We have received news from an initiative involving schools in places like the Manuel Belgrano School in Buenos Aires, or the Euskal Echea School in Llavallol, both in Argentina with a variety of commemorative activities.
These lines below illustrate some of the commemorations planned in the Diaspora.
Today, April 26
Germany
-Gernika Kulturverein Euskal Etxea, Berlín: From 3-5pm, “Sky Exchange” at the Flugplatz Gatow Airport. More information, here.
Argentina
-School Number 6 Manuel Belgrano, Buenos Aires: 5pm closing of the “Gernika,” exhibit, crated with material provided by the Basque Government, Gernika’s Peace Museum, and the Delegation of Eusakdi in Argentina-Mercosur. The event will include a performance by the Euskaltzaleak – Basque Language School in Buenos Aires.
-Unión Vasca, Bahía Blanca: 6pm, watering of the Tree of Gernika located in the Barrio Palihue (Casanova and Cerrito) 7pm photo exhibit and explanatory videos complete with works by the club’s children. The commemoration will continue on May 5th at 8pm with planting of saplings and a musical conclusion to the photo exhibit. More information, here.
-Zingirako Euskaldunak, Chascomús: 5:15pm wreath laying and Aurresku at the oak in the Independence Plaza. The commemoration will continue May 4-11 with an exhibit on Gernika and its closer with the participation of the Eusko Haizia group. More information, here.
-Denak Bat, Mar del Plata: 5:30pm, commemorative event in front of the Tree of Gernika located in Plaza San Martín.
-Zazpirak Bat, Rosario: 7pm, event at the Gernika Plaza (Mitre and Salta). Followed by a photo exhibit (with material facilitated by the Archive of the Museum of Peace in Gernika) and a lecture by Professor Ignacio Lardizábal at the Euskal Etxea. The exhibit will be open during May and June at the Basque club in Rosario.
