Montevideo, Uruguay. The writer and politician Raul Iturria presented The Basque Contribution to Uruguay: Vasconia Uruguayensis’ at a meeting on May 17th that was attended by a large number of people. Iturria, originally from Durazno is the grandson of Navarrese and Gipuzkoan Basques, has a broad political career in the National Party, in which he was Minister of the Interior and mayor of the department of Durazno. After the presentation, the hosts provided the author with club membership.
The book, published in 2017, was presented by the author as “a grateful tribute to the ethnic group of the Pyrenees.” Through the 450 pages, Iturria reviews “the numerous descendants of Basques who have nurtured the national life, from the jurists Irureta Goyena and Jimenez de Arechaga to presidents Berro or Idiarte Borda,” the club explained.
The club’s next activity will be next week, on June 8th, for Bingo and being the many of its members Navarrese the next main one will be on July 7th to celebrate San Fermin. They will also organize a talk by writer Martin Ospitaleche also in July.
