Boise, Idaho. Last Saturday, three female dantzaris performed for the first time the traditional San Inazio dances that are danced in Boise, Idaho every July, as part of the annual San Inazio celebration, the feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Part of the celebration includes a procession to the church with the local Oñati Dancers carrying an image of the saint, to the sounds of txistus, this year to St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Once there, the group performs dances that are traditionally performed in Oñati, Gipuzkoa on the feast of Corpus Christi both inside the church and outside after mass.
Three Basque-American women, Jaclyn Lasuen, Elise Overgaard and Kristina Franzoia, had the honor for the first time, this year to share these dances with their male counterparts. These dances have taken root in Boise over the last decades to become part of the ritual, which is repeated annually combining devotion, tradition, and the Basque contribution to the hallmarks of the city of Boise that is also Gernika’s sister-city.
