The 39 World Mus Championships of Basque Collectivities will begin this weekend in Donostia with the team of Alejandro Eyherabide and Eduardo Martín representing Argentina.  The federations in Argentina and the US are the two that gather the most muslaris during the qualification stages for this tournament.  In Argentina, Eyherabide and Martin are from Macachin, and won the National Tournament that took place in Laprida.

Laprida, Argentina.   The Lagunen Etxea Basque Club in Laprida hosted the 2016 National Mus Tournament.  The event took place from August 13-15 and was held at the local Social Club.

Over the three days, two championships took place. The National Tournament named “Tito Merzdorf Gortari,” gathered 19 teams representing 17 clubs.  Remember that the winner of the previous year’s tournament get to have 2 teams representing it at the national level, in this case local players Alejandro Eyherabide and Eduardo Martín, beat a team from Euzko Alkartasuna in Macachin, and so they won the right to represent their county at the international level that will take place in Donostia from October 8-16.  The team will be accompanied by delegate Edgardo Larraza.

In regards to the parallel tournament, named by the organizers “Renee Iriarte,” this other tournament gathered 30 teams with the winning team Oliva-Totorikaguena from Rosario, Santa Fe.

Three Days of Festivities

Along with the Mus tournaments, the hosts also prepared a program of activities that included something for everyone.  On the first day of the tournament, members of the Arturo Campion Center for Basque Studies in Laprida presented the book Guregandik.  There was also an after dinner performance by the Center dancers

Continuing the recreational activities, there was a comedy show on Sunday night, a dance and a musical show; and to close the tournament, the farewell lunch also included the awards ceremony.

As Edgardo Larraza told EuskalKultura.com, “it was three days of festivities.  We are very happy about the number of people who attended; in general, this type of activity gathers some 70 people, and here we had some 150 including muslaris, their companions; and the best part is that everyone had a great time.  We are very happy with how it all went,” Larraza concluded.
