New London, CT. The Basque Fest in New London has become the referential Basque festival on the east coast of the US. Last year’s debut was a complete success, and this year promises to surpass all expectations. Organized by the New England Basque Club, it is also supported by the local mayor and city that shares its rich whaling past with the Basques. The event will take place in the main plaza in New London that will be filled with stands much like Basque festivals in Euskal Herria and will reverberate with the sounds of Basque music. Basque products will be available for sale, and there will be pintxos, txakoli, cider, and wine from the Rioja Alavesa to enjoy along with paella crated in typical Basque style.
Throughout the day, there will be exhibitions of rural Basque sports thanks to the club’s sport team, experts in this field who also have a long tradition of performing all over North America.
There will also be plenty of music and dance with the participation of the Ruby Mountain Ardi Baltza Dancers, who will perform a show about the maritime history of the Basques. They will also teach a workshop on traditional Basque dance. Members of the group to perform on Saturday are Kiaya Memeo, Franci Mendive, Natalia Moiola, Kelcey Myers, Beth Cellura, Casey Cellura, Brooke Filipini, Charleigh Baetia, Ezri Memeo, Olivia Memeo, Halleigh Myers and Corey Cellura.
Don’t forget that after the great success of last year’s festival, this year will serve as a dress rehearsal for next year’s NABO Convention and Basque Festival that will also be hosted by the New England Basque Club, with the participation of Basques of the entire country, Euskal Herria and other places in the Diaspora.
