Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Reading workshop “The Basque Mythological Imaginary,” taught by Dr. Luis Maria Etcheverry will run during the month with sessions weekly.  Starting from the concept that ‘shared reading creates a closeness between the world of the text and our possible worlds and experiences” the Eusko Kultur Etxea (EKE) hope that the program will include reflections on what a myths is and topics such as the coven, the male figure goat, witch hunts, and funeral rituals, among others.

The workshop is free and to participate all you need to do is enroll ahead of time via email eusketxe@gmail.com. Even if it began yesterday with 40 participants from Araba, Gipuzkoa, Peru and Uruguay as well as those joining from Argentina, anyone wishing to join in may do so on the coming Monday, October 26th orl on November 2nd and 9th at 5:30pm local time. Classes are in Spanish and the bibliography is provided by the organizers.

Activities during the quarantine

The city of Buenos Aires was one of the most contagious spots when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Argentina. Since the end of March a preventative and obligatory shelter in place was enforced, with a gradual reopening that continues today. In this context the local Basque clubs had to cancel their in person activities and adapt to the new situation.

In regards to this point, Maria Elena Etcheverry, director of the Eusko Kultur Etxea, explained to EuskalKultura.eus that Eusketxe also had to postpone several of its projects.  “Not the Basque classes, that began in March and with great effort by the students who had to adapt to a new reality, along with the instructors that had to incorporate the use of computer tools,” she pointed out.

“For some older students, continues the EKE reference, technology surpassed them and they fell by the wayside; but the most managed to overcome the obstacles, many of them thanks to our great insistence, and today they are comfortable and grateful since another world has opened up for them.  I this sage of isolation, having new goals is very good for them and for us too.”

Members of the Eusketxe are very happy with the response to the online workshop "since it allows us, to consolidate our Global Basque community,” Etcheverry concludes.
