Bilbao, Bizkia. This is an activity for youth between the ages of 16-17 years, although in the case of individuals form the Diaspora there is some flexibility. The deadline to enroll is March 18th, although due to several requests the deadline may be extended. This is why anyone interested should take our advice and contact the organization as soon a possible.
Thanks to the institions and entities that support it, including the French Region of New Aquitaine (including Iparralde), the Basque Government and the Government of Navarre, and the Euroregion Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarre, this activity is free. This is also the case for participants form the Diaspora (depending not he number of eligible candidates, however scholarships seem to be guaranteed for at least two individuals).
There are only 120 spots and Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Society of Basque Studies in the Basque Country, celebrating its centennial founded in 1918 by the Provincial Governments of Alava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Navarre, will be in charge of the selection process. This activity is aimed at Basque youth, and so the first criteria is to be fluent in Basque. In the case of youth from the Diaspora they stress that perfect Basque is not required, although a basic level is required along with the willingness to use and practice it during their stay.
The tour will run July 1-31, leaving Maule, Zuberoa and concluding at the Bridge of Bizkaia in Getxo, Bizkaia. With a backpack on their back, the youth will tour the Basque Country on foot with daily routes, some part of the Camino de Santiago, in its three versions, classic, coastal and in the interior, visiting for example UNESCO monuments to humanity and at each stop participating in a cultural visit, workshops, games, sports, and debates. Sleeping in sleeping bags in covered spaces like sports or civic complexes, schools and other venues provided by the local town halls, organized by each town.
They will be accompanied by chaperones and coordinators, along with other professionals including medical personnel, physiotherapists, photographers as well as other collaborators.
