Buenos Aires, Argentina. Buenos Aires, Argentina. In this especially difficult year, the Etxepare Basque Institute and FEVA continue to work to train Basque teachers in South America. As such, they will hold their usual Summer Intensive Basque course January 9-16th. Due to the pandemic, the event will take place virtually and will gather some 30 students from Basque clubs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay who will attend from home.
The director of the Euskara Munduan Program, Kinku Zinkunegi told EuskalKultura.eus that the current group of teachers in training began the online course in March, hoping to gather in person in July. Due to quarantine, that didn’t happen, but they did seek a virtual alternate to continue the process.
“This is how we organized our first virtual Barnetegi. It was a challenge for everyone, but we would like to stress the excellent mood of the students, their patience, group work and desire to learn....under such special circumstances, they deserve our recognition,” Zinkunegi emphasized.
Since the health situation has not improved since July, the 2021 Summer Barnetegi will also be held virtually. In regards to the class dynamic, future teachers will be organized in three groups, with classes in the morning and afternoon beginning with greetings and conversation, with some well-known Basque speaker; and the afternoons including games.
The teachers in charge are López de Vicuña, Gabriel Arce and Rocío Basterra, who were also trained in the Euskara Munduan program and have a level C1. The coordination will be done by Gabriela Mendia, from FEVA, and Zinkunegi from the Etxepare Basque Institute.
