Donostia-San Sebastián. EuskalKultura.eus and the Sancho de Beurko Association have agreed on a line of collaboration in hopes of sharing the results of the innovative research carried out by the Fighting Basques. Memory of the Second World War, with special emphasis on the United States, to which stories from the Basque front during the Spanish Civil War will be added.
EuskalKultura will host the blog “Echoes of Two Wars: 1939-1945,” that will contain “unpublished stories about the contributions made by Basques and Basque-Americans during the last World War, along with lesser-known facts about the future of the Basque Front in the struggle that made the Spanish Republic succumb,” historian Pedro J. Oiarzabal explained who with his colleagues Guillermo Tabernilla and Josu M. Aguirregabiria will be in charge of writing the blog.
“For us, it is an honor to be able to support the work and contribute to the dissemination of Sancho de Beurko’s research,” Joseba Etxarri, manager of EuskalKultura.eus said. “This is original and innovative frontline research that has uncovered hitherto unknown aspects of our history, such as the contribution of Basques in the US Diaspora to the World War II effort,” he said.
The Fighting Basques is a research project that began six years ago in conjunction with NABO’s Memoria Bizia Oral History Program. To date research has been completed and continues to gather information on about 1,000 veterans, men and women of Basque origin from World War II, corresponding to 44 states and Puerto Rico.
The ultimate goal of the project is the creation in the United States of a “Basque National Monument to World War II. “To serve as a lasting memory for all veterans of Basque origin who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II, and as an educational tool for everyone to realize the contributions they made to the history of the country,” Oiarzabal concludes.
The first installment of the blog will take place this Friday, right now just in Spanish.
