The date is getting closer and awaited with anticipation. The Basque club in Arrecifes will be one of the Argentinean Basque clubs that has been around for a century and continues its tireless work in the maintenance and diffusion of the Basque culture, in the north of the province of Buenos Aires. As every February, the center celebrated another anniversary and this year did so with dinner “for members and friends who are always with us.” The celebration was one of the activities that the club carries out during the center, along with Basque classes and celebrating San Sebastian.

Arrecifes, Argentina.  “Linking the past with the future, Basque clubs in Argentina articulate the legacy of their ancestors with future projects.  In this way, the present becomes a place to preserve what we have received but also for what is to come, each as valuable as the other.”  In this spirit the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes celebrated its 92nd birthday.

The dinner that gathered 70 people was held in the club’s taberna where Juan Lucio Agotegaray said a few words.  Among the authorities in attendance were the acting Mayor of Arrecifes, Marcos Pernicone and the secretary of the government, Julio Suarez.

The anniversary also held a special spot in the recital given days before by Maral, the music group that has been linked to the institution since its beginning, at the clubhouse.  Mariana Dominé Irigoyen, group speaker and former club president, not only said a few words but also sang a classic song in Euskera.

Finally, and also part of the anniversary celebration, the Basque club sent videos with a compilation of its 2013 activities (see here; Video 1 and Video 2).

San Sebastian in Arrecifes

Even if the majority of Basque clubs in Argentina are taking a summer break, others continue their activities.  This is not the first time that Basque classes have continued in Arrecifes.  In a relaxed atmosphere, the students continue their learning but also took advantage of the summer nights to have some tapas and wine.

Club doors were also opened on January 19th to join in the Tamborrada from Donostia.  Organized by the Euskera group and the Lucio Echaniz Library, the tamborreros from Arrecifes practiced the march first and then played along with the videos shown.  Among the giant forks and spoons, the night continued until dinner.
