The invitation is open to all children’s centers in the area and provides an opportunity for children to come together and play as well as to share and get to know the Basque culture.  Besides letting us know about this activity, the club also let us know that a house constructed by the Basque and the city has now been turned over to its new owners.

Ayacucho, Argentina.   The fun day organized by Euskal Odola is now in its 8th year in 2015. The get-together called Traditional Basque Games will take place today and is aimed at local children of the age of 5. The event will take place at the clubhouse on Sarmiento 729, and will also include the participation of PE teachers.

But this isn’t the only Basque club invitation this week.  In fact, on November 15, they will also hold an Afternoon of Cards, a monthly get-together organized by the club so that members can share a Sunday among friends, playing card games with the chance to win nice prizes.

Solidarity project

The commitment of the Euskal Odola Basque club to its community is obvious when talking about its current activities.  But the club has also participated in bigger events and taken greater risks, like that of October 9 when it presented a house that it built along with the city, to its new owners, a family in need.

As we had previously reported on EusaklKultura.com, a grant from the Basque Government was used to purchase the materials and with the collaboration of the local government that paid for the labor, they were able to build and donate a home within a year. This one went to Yanina Villalba, mother of seven children.  Accoridng to Elena Alberro, Basque club vice-president, “last year we began building two houses; we have already turned the first one over to its owner and we soon hope to do the same with the second.”  The house is located on Martin Fierro Street 1506, and at an event where the house was turned over to its owners, the owner could not thank the local authorities or the Basque club enough.

A house for the club as well

The club has long dreamed of having its own clubhouse and this dream may soon come true.  The club acquired land in 2012 and that is where, little by little, they have been raising walls for what will be their new clubhouse. In the words of Alberro, “we have already built a hall with a bathroom and kitchen.  Now we have to do the roof that will take us more time and resources.  We would like to have it completed by April, since our lease for this building is up then.  That way we could move in and start operating from there.  We are all working towards this,” the vice-president said.

In the meantime, members of Euskal Odola are in the middle of their activities they are making plans to participate in the “2016 Veal Festival.”  “As always, we will be there with our float.  The idea for next year is to build a scene including both Basques and Argentines,” Alberro said.
