The Gallery Studio Lofft San Angel in Mexico City will inaugurate today an exhibit of seven contemporary Basque artists entitled, “Euskal Dirdira Mexikon: The Basque Glow in Mexico.” The artists gathered in this exhibit have grown up with the influence of the prestigious Basque school led by Jorge Oteiza and Eduardo Chillida, legacy that “reenacts the current complexity.” Exhibiting artists include: Fernando Biderbost, Aitor Etxebarria, Naia del Castillo and brothers, Fernando and Vicente Roscubas, Luís Candaudap and Gorka Larrañaga, who is based in México.

Mexico City, Mexico.  The Gallery Studio Lofft in Mexico City will inaugurate an exhibit this afternoon that brings a small representation of current Basque creation to the country, thanks to creators Fernando Biderbost, Aitor Etxebarria, Naia del Castillo and brothers, Fernando and Vicente Roscubas, Luís Candaudap and Gorka Larrañaga.  Larrañaga has lived in Mexico for a few years and has created a small bridge between the Basque art work, through the Casa Galeria projects.  Larrañaga, is also the Basque language and culture lecturer at a Mexican university.

The exhibit is entitled, “Euskal Dirdira Mexickon, Glow of the Basque Country” and gathers a group of selected artists to maintain a highly specific trajectory.  The exhibit will allow viewers to get better acquainted with various genres of art including painting, sculpture, object and photography.

According to Gorka Larrañaga and Luis Candaudap, artists and curators, “the Basque culture has been lavished with art expressions from the vanguard, mainly in the years following the Spanish Civil War, where cultural vindication was developed underground and had expressions of art that had a powerful international impact.” Jorge Oteiza and Eduardo Chillida were the greatest exponents of the so-called “Basque School.”

The curators explain that the new generation of artists, “taking the Oteiza legacy and bringing their budgets up to date, certain young artists have begun new modes of expression through video and performance.”  Creators participating in the exhibit are the natural successors of this artistic production.

The inauguration of the exhibit will take place today June 17th, at 19:00 at the Estudio Lofft located at Cuauhtémoc 158 B-4, Col. Tizapán, San Ángel.
