Donostia-San Sebastián. From 1519 to 1522 Juan Sebastian Elcano, Basque navigator from Getaria, first circumnavegated the globe. On the 500th anniversary of this feat the Elkano Fundazioa is providing a program of events to take advantage of the occasion and extract reflections and lessons from that experience that allow us to better understand the time and society that these characters lived in. Last Saturday, a cycling route that began in Getaria ended in Seville, Spain crossing numerous towns and four territories linked to the expedition.
The trip that began on September 9th and ended on the 19th took 11 days and included 1,600 kilometers. The journey used the Magellan/Elcano example to address issues such as diversity, sustainability, the value of sacrifice, the ability to adapt to change and at the same time, open a historical and cultural route linking thirty towns in Euskadi, Castilla-Leon, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia that were part of the expedition’s history 500 years ago.

The Spanish edition of National Geographic covered the adventures of the trip. You can learn more about the expedition through five articles (I, II, III, IV, V) published on the magazine’s website. Culminating these intense days on wheels, the Magellan/Elcano Expedition team presented their experience at the First International Congress of Social Innovation in Seville.
