The Basque community in San Francisco and surrounding areas, and any fan of percussion in general, have a wonderful opportunity to get to know one of the most ancient and mysterious Basque instruments: the Txalaparta. The Basque Cultural Center has just begun a six week course and according to the teacher, Iñaki Lopez de Luzuriaga, there is still room.

San Francisco, CA.  San Francisco’s Basque Cultural Center has been holding a class on Txalaparta since April 24, organized as part of the local Basque community’s springtime cultural activities.  The workshop lasts for six weeks and its goal is to introduce the instrument to students, as well as to give them a solid base to further deepen the mysteries and techniques of this ancestral instrument.

Classes are being taught by Iñaki Lopez de Luzuriaga, txalapartari and Basque language and culture instructor at Stanford University.  The course began with eight students but the teacher is encouraging anyone interested to enroll.

-classes are held on Tuesdays at 7pm at the Basque Cultural Center
