Donostia-San Sebastián. There is no doubt that many Basques around the world celebrated Aberria Eguna on April 12th, although due to the quarantine in a different way and maintaining safety measures that obliged the cancellation of face-to-face gatherings.  Yes, there were Basques that didn’t let the day pass without celebrating and responding to the annual call, thousands from their balconies on various continents with their Ikurriñas took pictures with the flag to share them later on social media.

Here are three of these events from Caracas (Venezuela), Cañuelas (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay).

Caracas

Eusko Etxea in Caracas coincided this year celebrating Aberri Eguna together with the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of its clubhouse (as part of the Aberri Eguna celebrations in 1950).  As such, in the morning they broadcast a live program of activities that included songsa blessing, and raising of the Ikurriña, an Aurresku and talk about txakoli (more information here).

Cañuelas

From Cañuelas, where the Dantzari Gathering takes place every year on Aberri Eguna, they also took exceptional measures.  “The pandemic doesn’t stop Denak Bat,” its president Veronica Zulaica told us proudly.  Virtual Aberri Eguna 2020, began with a video from the club, followed by a dance on Zoom with 60 people attending, including live music by one of our most important historic figures, “Jopu” Galfredo.  Some of the attendees also announced on social media that they had a hangover the next day.”

Montevideo

In Montevideo, members of the Haize Hegoa Basque Club put together an original and entertaining video that despite the isolation united everyone by passing a txapela from one to the other.  For many it is the winning video…

Zorionak to all that celebrated Aberri Eguna online and we hope that in 2021 we eill be able to celebrate together under better circumstances, having overcome the current obstacles. Aurrera beti!
