Donostia-San Sebastián. The Basque Government will celebrate the Day of the Basque Diaspora tomorrow, September 8th, at an event that will pay tribute to Basques abroad, in order to review, acknowledge and publicize their contributions, past and present to the Basque country and culture. It will be a simple event with utmost respect of all precautions put in place regarding COVID-19, limited attendance, respecting social distancing and no public attendance as the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad told EuskalKultura.eus.
The event will be presided by Lehendakari Urkullu and will also include institutional representatives from the Basque Government as well as the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa, as well as the Mayors of Ormaiztegi, the hosting town, and that of Urretxu, Iparragirre’s hometown that is celebrating the bicentennial of his birth all year long. A video will be shown, accompanied by live txistu music, with dantzaris from Basque clubs and communities in Chile, Switzerland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Cañuelas, Reno Montevideo, Boise, Sydney and Madrid.
Two actors will also perform a conversation between Iparragirre and his wife. The event will then conclude with Lehendakari Urkullu’s remarks.
