General Deheza, Argentina. Located in the center of the Province of Cordoba, General Deheza has around 12,000 inhabitants, and celebrated its Patron Saint’s Day on August 15th in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, patron of the city, even if the program ran throughout the month with a great number of activities.
Invited by the secretary of culture, Marita Echave gave a talk about her book Country Basque Cuisine as part of the festivities on Saturday, August 20. The presentation took place in the House of Culture and was attended by local authorities and media, as well as a large audience. It is interesting that the city of General Deheza published a list of Basque last names on its Facebook page as a special invitation to members of these families. After Echave’s presentation, guests were offered some Basque-Argentine stew that is among the recipes included in the book.
According to the writer -- she is also the president of the Gure Zainak Basque Club in Coronel Moldes -- “Once again we were given the opportunity to remember the customs of our Basque grandparents, the value of their mother tongue: Euskera; the reasons for their immigration, the presence of the Basques in the fight for independence and the formation of our institutions…and obviously the influence on Basque cooking and our culinary habits,” Echave told EuskalKultura.com.
