Boise, Idaho will be the site beginning tomorrow, March 15-18^th of an international conference, “Memory and Emotion, Women’s Stories: Constructing Meaning from Memory,” with the participation of dozens of researcher from the US and beyond.  The conference was organized by the Department of World Languages and the Eloise Garmendia Bieter Chair at Boise State University (BSU)

Boise, ID.   This is the first cultural studies conference organized by BSU, with support of the Idaho Humanities Council, various BSU departments, as well as the Etxepare Basque Institute. Sessions will begin tomorrow under the coordination of Nere Lete and Larraitz Ariznabarreta.  The event is free and open to the public with two keynote speeches by Haitian researcher, Evelyne Trouillot and Marijo Olaziregi from the Basque Country who will speak on March 16^th and 17^th respectively. Trouillot’s talk is entitled “Challenging Memories to Rewrite History" while Dr. Olaziregi’s talk is entitled Beyond the Motherland: Memory and Emotion in Contemporary Basque Women's Fiction.”

The conference hopes to address questions such as, does emotion help us remember? Do cultures remember differently? How do emotions affect the ability to remember memories of the past? How does memory contribute to adaptation? Does restoring oneself, individually or collectively, mean daring to remember? Or is forgetting necessary for survival?
