“From Gernika to New York, via Montevideo,” is the name of the conference that the Basque-Uruguayan community and the Euskal Erria Fellowship in Montevideo is celebrating in honor of the 75th anniversary of the arrival of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Aguirre’s welcome to Uruguay after being a refugee in Europe at the hands of the fascists.  The events will include a meeting a presentation of Basque-American publishers in Argentina, US, and Uruguay. 

Montevideo, Uruguay.  The conference “From Gernika to New York, via Montevideo,” begins on Friday and will run through Tuesday in various emblematic places in the Uruguayan capital, including the Plaza Jesus de Galindez, the Plaza Gernika, Nation’s Congress and the Basque Fellowship Euskal Erria, and will commemorate and remember the 75 years since the arrival and welcome of Lehendakari Jose Antonio de Agirre y Lekube to Montevideo.

Friday, December 2

• 11.30 am. Plaza Jesús de Galíndez. Located on Irigoitia esq. Jesús de Galíndez. Re-inauguration of the plaza and hanging of a plaque. Participation of an aurreskulari and txistulari from Mar del Plata, Argentina

Saturday December 3

• 11:30 am. Plaza Gernika. Located on Av. Cataluña esq. Manuel Alonso. Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika.  Participation of the “Voices of the Plaza” choir and an aurreskulari and txistulari from Mar del Plata, Argentina
• 17.00pm at the Euskal Erria Basque Club, Meeting of Basque-American publishers. Presentation of the book Euskera in Argentina by Magdalena Mignaburu. Presentation of the book Basque Echoes in Uruguay, Anthology of Basque Poetry in our Country by Dr. Raúl Iturria. Presentation of the books published by Euskal Erria publishers in 2017. Presentation of books published by Ekin in Buenos Aires, by its director María Elena Etcheverry

• 16:00. CLAEH University. Zelmar Michelini 1220. Lecture, “The Odyssey of Aguirre (his trip from Dunkirk to Montevideo)” by Dr. Xabier Irujo University of Nevada, Reno, USA.

Tuesday, December 6

• 16:30pm. Legislative Palace. Hall of House of Representatives.  Tribute that the Uruguayan Basque community pays to the House of Representatives in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the welcome that this body gave Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre after his flight from fascist Europe.
• 18:00 pm. Legislative Palace. Acuña de Figueroa Hall. Tribute the Uruguayan Basque community pays to the House of Representatives.  Participation of the “Voices of the Plaza” choir, and an aurreskulari and txistulari from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Admission payable at the door.
