Concert of works by Basque-Mexican Manuel de Sumaya this Wednesday in Argentina’s capital

The annual classical music concert cycle at the College Euskal Echea in Buenos Aires began last month and will run through November. For the second function of 2014, the “La rosa purpura del Plata” emsemble will present, for the first time in Argentina, works by Manuel de Sumaya, Mexican composer of Basque origin. Specialists in Renaissance and Baroque, musicians will also give an introductory talk. The event will take place day after tomorrow and is free and open to the public.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Once again, the chapel at the College Euskal Echea in the capita will become the scene for classic music concerts organized by the institution.  The 2014 cycle began on May 14th with the presentation of organist Mario Videla and will continue this Wednesday, June 11th with a new program for the Argentinean public.

Thanks to the group “La rosa purpura del Plata” the chapel’s historic organ will be heard playing various pieces by Basque-Mexican composer Manuel de Sumaya, “The Handel of America.” Selected pieces include: Si ya a aquella nave, Como aunque culpa, Pescador soberano and Ya la naturaleza redimida, to name a few.  Remember that Manuel Sumaya (1680-1755), was the maestro at Mexico’s Cathedral and was the principal resident composer and organist there.  His works show a variety and richness of styles prevailing in the area of Spanish influence.

Regarding “La rosa purpura del Plata” is a group of varied training that, under the direction of Gabriel Schebor, will present Tenor Pablo Travaglino, on this occasion along with violinists Martha Cosattini and Cecilia Carnero, Gabriel Schebor on the oboe and Ana Paula Segurola on the organ.  Specialized in Renaissance and Baroque music, with wide experience with the Latin-American repertoire, including at the international level, “La rosa purpura del Plata” has performed on stages in Argentina, England and Holland among others.  Musicians will also present a talk prior to the concert.

Program for upcoming recitals as follows:

-Thursday, September 11th: Lagun Onak Choir (directed by Miguel Pesce), Jose Maria Gutierrez (txistu), and organ
-Wednesday, October 8th:  Elena Deanna (soprano) and Maria Cristina Deanna (organ)
-Wednesday, November 12th: Extraordinary concert with the choirs from the Colleges Euskal Echea in the capital (directed by Jose Antonio Carozo) and Llavallol (directed by Alejandro Hansen) with Matias Sagreras (organ)
