“Mexico is ready to welcome the participants (of the International Mus Championship), even tomorrow,” told Pablo Mendiburu to Euskalkultura.com. The 37 World Championship will be hosted in Cancun in October, after having been in Mexico four times before – in Mexico City (1981 and 1989) and in Acapulco (1999 and 2004). Along with Mendiburu, who feels “optimistic” about this edition, five other volunteers have been organizing the event: Juan José Echenique, Ramón Irigoyen, Juan José Arrieta, Agustín Palacios, and Josetxo Garaicoechea.
Mexico City, Mexico. The Basque Club of Polanco, in Mexico City, has had the professional aid of Proconvenciones, “the leader event-organizing company in the country,” in the words of the Basque-Mexican. “We wanted the Championship to be organized as good as possible, that is why we opted for them.”
But not just they helped the ‘Euskal Etxea’ organizing the tournament, the tennis-gear company K-Swiss and two other senior sponsors (that do not want to show their names yet) also gave a hand. “It’s a very valuable and necessary help,” as Mendiburu said. In fact, each country will put 1,200 U.S dollars and the rest shall be put by the organizers.
Winners will be given a ‘txapela’, or Basque beret, as a symbol of victory; “the honor of being the world champions,” in the words of Mendiburu; and also "a surprise" that he still does not want to unveil.
There will be twelve countries taking part, to wit: Argentina, Basque Country, Uruguay, USA, Canada, Chile, Spain, Peru, Venezuela, Australia, France, and Mexico. Each country will count with a couple of participants, with the exception of France and Mexico that will have two each – the former for being the current World Champions and the latter for being the host country. All in all, there will be 14 teams playing in the World Championship that will have their own delegate from their country by their side.
The competition will be celebrated between the 20th and the 25th of October but organizers foresee that foreigners shall stay from the 19 to the 26. The hotel in which all of them will be lodged is the Moon Palace, “one of the ten best five-star hotel in the Riviera Maya,” stated Mendiburu. They expect 250 people, taking into account participants, relatives, friends, and mus aficionados.
Organizers would like this event to be more than a mus tournament; they would like it to be a good opportunity for people to get to know the hosting land. That’s the reason why they have prepared different tours of different prices that can be checked on their website. There are also special offers for Mexicans, with a shorter stay in Cancun, “because we would like that, at least, half of the attendees being Mexican.”
Besides the International Mus Championship there will also be an Open Mus Tournament and a Golf Tournament. “We already know that these events gathers a big interest in France and in the US,” said the spoke-person. “There will be many surprises,” finished Mendiburu.
