On April 18, the Kern County chapter of the California Women for Agriculture hosted their first ever ‘Basque Crawl’−a delectable Basque-American journey through three historical Basque restaurants in Bakersfield: Woolgrower’s, Pyrenees, and Narducci’s. The goal of the association was to raise money to support scholarships to go to two recipients in CSUB’s Agricultural Business Program. “I saw on Facebook how active the local Basque community is, with all those events, and since they’re also involved with agriculture, I thought it could be a great idea to work along with them,” told Nicole Palmer, Vice President of the CWA’s Kern County Chapter, EuskalKultura.com. “Everything went very well, we raised some money and people had a great time,” she added.

Bakersfield, CA. Three historical Basque restaurants in Bakersfield, California, collaborated with the California Women for Agriculture, in order to raise some funds for scholarships for two CSUB students. Woolgrower’s was the starting point for the 60 plus people that joined the CWA, and the restaurant served all the attendees the classic Basque-American dinner they’re famous for. After that, the group moved to Pyrenees had some drinks, to finish the night at Narducci’s, where they even enjoyed a live show by a local band.

The crawlers wore red, blue, or white t-shirts that read “save water, drink wine/beer,” in an attempt to also raise awareness about the draught that is ravaging the state. “People had a very good time while helping for a good cause,” in the words of Palmer, who also revealed the association’s desire to held another crawl next year. “We would like this to get bigger every year.”

First two recipients

Thanks to the $45 paid by each attendee and the agreements reached by CWA and the restaurants, the organizers raised $520 that went, directly, to the scholarships. Nevertheless, as Palmer highlighted, the full amount donated by the association was $1,000, to be shared by this year’s two recipients, to wit: Patrick Streiff and Oscar Alvarez.

“Our goal is to help agriculture through helping students,” stated the vice-president. Among other events the association organizes, this first scholarships were also made possible thanks to the help of CSUB Dr. S. Aaron Hedge Phd, Agriculture Business Program Director, and Angel Cottrell, BPA Outreach Coordinator.
