Buenos Aires, Argentina. Festival organizers have announced the change in the date “due to a national march for the legalization of marijuana being scheduled at the same time on Saturday at the Plaza de Mayo, with a march to the Congress on Ave. de Mayo.” The Basque event will be attended by the director of Basque Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo Itsaso.
All of the rest of the festival details, if any other changes were to take place, it would be published immediately on the 2016 Facebook page.
The “Buenos Aires Celebrates” is a festival organized by the General Directorate of Institutional Relations of the government of the city of Buenos Aires to pay tribute to the communities that live together in the capital city.
In the case of the Basques, this year marks the fifth year that they participate and the organizers, as well as the public assure that it will be another success. Mainly run by the Laurak Bat Basque club, but with the collaboration of a large number of other clubs, “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” will take place on May 7, beginning at noon, on the Avenida de Mayo, near the Cabildo. There, thousands of Basque descendants and friends of Euskal Herria will gather who want to spend an afternoon in an authentic Basque climate.
Following the model of previous years, the festival will begin with a parade of the students from the Euskal Echea school, and among other cultural manifestations, there will be a Tamborrada from Donostia, music and dance performances, children’s games, a masters cooking class taught by Itziar Aguirre and Arantxa Soraluce, and new this year, videos about Euskal Herria on a large screen and an ephemeral art contest where anyone can draw with chalk what “Buenos Aires Celebrates” means to them.
With less than a month before the festival, organizers have provided a tentative program to us that includes activities as well as participants. The information will continue to be updated over the coming weeks on BA Celebrates the Basque Country's Facebook page. They have also informed us, that in case of rain, the festival will resume the next day, on May 8th.
