On Saturday October 18th, the Basque Center from Boise, Idaho will turn into a cider house to raise funds for their dancers. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards transportation costs and lodging for the Oinkaris, who are hoping to perform at the 2015 Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, Washington. “It will be a unique opportunity for us to perform in front of an audience that might not be familiar with Basque culture,” Oinkari president Lael Uberuaga told Euskalkultura.com.
Boise, ID. This will be the third time that Oinkari dancers organize a Sagardotegi fundraising event in order to take Basque culture beyond their state’s borders. On this occasion, they will also be sponsored by Bereziartua − a very well-known cidermaker brand from the Basque Country, who will donate 100 liters for the event.
Dinner will start at around 6:00 p.m. and the menu will consist of cod sautéed with onions, peppers and garlic and a cod omelet, thick-cut steaks as the main course, and bread, walnuts and Basque cheese. “Jesus Alcelay is the official chef at most of the club events and he will cook at the sagardotegi night too,” said Uberuaga. “And members of the group will also help in the kitchen, waiting tables, and serving the food.”
They expect 200 people, who will pay $50 per person or $90 for two tickets. Along with the dinner and cider refills, attendees will also enjoy live a txalaparta performance by Annie and Elena Gavica, and Uberuaga herself. A trikitixa demonstration is also in the program. Tickets can be purchased on the dance group’s website or by emailing txotx@oinkari.org. Deadline for reservations is October the 11th.
